UPDATED: Island-wide power outage
Posted Mon, Jul 19th 2010, 18:54(Grand Cayman - CITN) -
Grand Cayman was powerless much of Friday night and into Saturday morning.
CUC officials confirm the island-wide power outage was caused by severe lighting strikes to the system.
The system is set up to trip power sources once a fault is detected. It is set up that way to protect the damage from spreading to other resources. The fault occurred somewhere near the main plant, causing the outage to cause a domino effect. The location of the fault probably contributed to the blackout according to CUC officials.
The outage took a few hours to be restored to most customers, however some areas did not receive power until 6 a.m. Saturday morning (17 July).
Any customer who is still without electricity is asked to call CUC’s outage hotline at 945-1282.
CUC officials apologise for any inconvenience the outage may have caused.
