Cayman officials have their sights set on a Doppler radar for the Cayman Islands.

A contract has been signed to provide technical assistance for designing, tendering, constructing and commissioning the digital Doppler weather radar station on Grand Cayman.

Airport officials say the radar will allow the Cayman Islands to improve the accuracy of early warnings for hurricanes and other severe weather.

The agreement is between the Cayman Islands Airports Authority and Icon Institute, a German-based company. The cost of the radar is just over KYD$4 million, most of which is a grant from the European Union.

The radar will be located in East End, on a small part of the former Prison Wilderness Farm. It is scheduled to be constructed by late 2011.
